Exclusion Groups
What is an Exclusion Group?
There might be cases where you want to exclude a particular type of user that would otherwise be targeted by the segment you created. Braze allows you to do this quickly and easily with exclusion groups.
Exclusion groups indicate which users you do not want to be part of your segment and apply across all filter groups. If a user matches the criteria of your exclusion group, they will not be added to your segment, even if they meet the other conditions you previously set.
For example, a movie streaming company might want to promote a new film release, but exclude all viewers who are less than 18 years old.
When building a segment, you have the option of applying one, or multiple, exclusion groups.
How to create an exclusion group
To add an exclusion group to your segment, scroll to the bottom of the segmentation tool and click Add an Exclusion Group. An exclusion group will always be connected to your other filter groups using an AND NOT operator.
Then define your exclusion group by adding segment filters the same way you would for filter groups.
Total Reachable Users
You can see an estimated reachable users statistic at the bottom of the exclusion group. This calculates the number of users that remain in your segment after the exclusion group is applied.
For example, if your segment's filter groups target users whose favorite movie genre is horror (100 users), but you decide to exclude all users who are younger than 18 (10 users) via an exclusion group, then the estimated reachable users statistic shown on this exclusion group would now equal 90.
