Set-up Internal Testing Groups

Internal Groups are the primary tool for testing how well your Braze integration and messaging is working. They allow you to group sets of test users and choose what types of tests they will be used for.

While you can test some aspects of messaging with individual users, Internal Groups make it easier to choose the right group of users for each testing task. A single test group can be used for multiple types of testing at the same time.

Internal Groups are broken up into three types, including:

  • User Event Group: Log events for these users in the Event User Log.
  • Content Test Group: Choose content test groups as recipients when sending messages.
  • Seed Group: Add users in these groups to a campaign or Canvas to receive a copy of every email sent.

You can only add to an Internal Group. Many of the people you'll use for testing are already , but you'll need to create an end-user profile for them for testing purposes. In most cases, it's easiest to do this using the CSV import function in the Braze dashboard.

In the following video, learn how to create an Internal Group in the Braze dashboard.

Add Test Users

After setting up your Internal Group, add test users to those groups.Test users must be in the Braze system. Often, you will have uploaded your test users into Braze via a CSV file. You can add both identified users (with an external_id) and to your Internal Groups.

In the following videos, learn how to add users to an Internal Group.

Add Identified Users Individually

Add Identified Users in Bulk

Add Unidentified Users

To add unidentified users to an internal group, follow these steps:

  1. In the Add Test User dialog, click on the Add Anonymous User tab.
  2. Choose the appropriate app that you're testing.
  3. If your device is on the same network as the computer you're using to access the dashboard, use the Set IP Address button. Otherwise, determine your test device's IP address.
  4. Start a new session on your device by opening your app or website.
  5. Press Find My User.
  6. Once you find the user, give them a name under Name this Test User.
  7. Press Add Test User to add your user.
Identified Users

Once you identify users on a device, Braze will not revert to making new users anonymous. It's best to keep a test environment or device for only anonymous users.
